The Romantic Period was the start of dramatic music full of passion and life, with the piano playing a significant role during the era!

After the French Revolution, artists used the atmosphere it created as inspiration for their works.

People became more open and public about their objections, which radiated through musician’s compositions.

Romanticism was mainly a reaction against political and social injustice.

It was also a way of rebelling against the industrial revolution that replaced people’s jobs with machines.

That probably explains why romantic music is so expressive and dramatic.

Yet this was not the only reason for the music style during the Romantic period; musicians and composers rebelled against the traditional music styles – which were commonly found throughout the classical period – and instead made way for freedom of expression.

Romantic music puts emphasis on emotion, prioritising personal feelings and expression.

There was a growing sense of ‘bigger music’, expanding orchestras, symphonies and more.

The Piano’s Improvement During The Romantic Period

The piano evolved significantly during the Romantic era, which took place between roughly 1820 to 1900.

Many evolutions have happened regarding the piano.

The amount of physical keys expanded from five to eight octaves.

Instead of constructing the piano frames out of wood, during the Romantic period, the frames were made of metal, improving the durability of the instrument.

These advancements enriched the entire tonal quality and pitch of the piano.

Explosion of Emotion and Expression

The Romantic period is known for its expressive melodies and the emotional depth it conveys.

During the era, many musicians and composers rebelled against tradition and the norm of how music was created, thus making it possible for pianists to truly express themselves when playing.

Composers moved away from the strict ‘rules’ Classical music entails and placed focus on free expression and personal emotion.

Musicians were encouraged to play with passion to invoke intense feelings such as sadness, longing, hope, love, etc.

The music tends to be introspective, letting the music reflect the composer’s inner emotions.

Lyrical Melodies

The piano often played lyrical melodies, which is a song-like melody resembling vocal lines.

Many piano pieces mimic songs with their long and flowing phrases.

It is characterised by a smooth-flowing melody and is typically slow.

The melodies were expressive and expansive, generally diatonic, but they allowed for chromatic movements to add to the atmosphere.

Also, the melodic phrases were longer than those you would typically find in the classical period.

Use of Pedal

The pedal was used freely since it was seen as another way to add emotion and colour to the music.

As the pedal’s techniques developed, it allowed pianists to do more leaps without sustaining the sound.

It leads to a richer and warmer sound.

The pedal was used to a much wider extent than compared to the classical period and has improved significantly.

Using the pedal enhances the textures of a composition and helps shape the atmosphere, too.

Harmonic Diversity And Complexity

In the Classical Period, harmonies were more logical, balanced and proportionate.

Whereas in the Romantic period, it is devoid of restraint and objectivity with more colourful and vibrant harmonies.

Dissonance plays a big role in Romantic music, causing the harmonies to be different and distinct.

Chromatic movements and modulations also formed a vital part in the harmonies during this era.

Chromaticism and dissonance were often used to create a tense atmosphere.

Expanded Use of Dynamics

There was a greater range of dynamics used during the Romantic Period.

Instead of the classic piano (p) or just forte (f) for a song, it grew to become a lot more such as fortissimo (ff), fortississimo (fff) and more!

It created an even greater dramatic effect in the music.

This has to do with the fact that Romantic music is extremely expressive, thus needing a greater dynamic range to do so.

In the Baroque period, sudden shifts were common but it was mainly since it was extremely difficult to control the dynamics on a harpsichord.

When the piano was introduced, the Classical Period moved away from sudden shifts and placed focus on gradual dynamic changes.

Yet, during the Romantic Period, sudden shifts of dynamic intensity were a great way to add dramatics and expression.

Technical Virtuosity

Many romantic pieces required fast melodic movements, showcasing pianists’ virtuosity.

The Romantic Period is known for its technically demanding piano pieces with challenging passages, complex rhythms and intense dynamics.

Since the pedal played a bigger role than it did during the Classical period, it added to the difficulty of playing romantic pieces.

Composers liked to experiment with new techniques that pushed the boundaries.

The structure of the piano became more and more perfect with dazzling technicality, requiring expert musicians to deal with the tasks.

All while still trying to invoke emotion and play expressively. Two of the most virtuous pianists were Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin.

Rubato

Rubato is the temporary disregarding of strict tempo to allow an expressive quickening or slackening without altering the overall pace.

Musicians and composers idolised this in most, if not all, of their Romantic works because it allows for an even greater expressive playing.

Programmatic elements

Programmatic elements mean telling a story through music.

It describes non-musical ideas such as poetry, nature and so forth.

An example would be in Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony where in the fourth movement of his work describes a violent thunderstorm.

Beethoven uses the timpani to describe the loud thunder, a piccolo for the lightning and other various instruments to create the idea of a big and thunderous storm.

Another example is The Hebrides, composed by Felix Mendelssohn, a concert overture describing Fingal’s cave and the majesty thereof.

The piano has evolved immensely during the Romantic Period.

It was also the start of shaking up grounds of injustice and speaking out about wrongness.

From Beethoven’s groundbreaking symphonies to Mozart’s breathtaking Sonatas, Classical Piano is one of the hardest music genres for any pianist to master, but continues to captivate audiences through timeless compositions and virtuous techniques.

Classical music is a genre that derived from approximately 1750 until 1820.

This time period was called the Classical Era due to its distinguished musical creations and characteristics.

It originated in Europe, where classical music was mostly written for the royals and nobles to enjoy while living their comfortable lives.

Many musical inventions were born during this era, and it was the start of the piano joining the spill as well.

Although the piano was created around the year 1700, the clarinet still played a dominant role during the earlier stages of the classical period.

Yet as more and more musicians realised the advantages of a piano, such as more dynamic control, the piano was used to bring breakthroughs to many artists.

It allowed composers to insert gradual sound changes, instead of an instant dynamic change – as used during the Baroque Period.

Classical piano sounds absolutely beautiful, but do not be deceived – it is extremely difficult.

In fact, classical piano is infamous for its technical difficulty and complexity.

Notes have to be played with precision while conveying emotion and that alone is not an easy task.

No wonder most of the hardest piano pieces to play were composed during the classical period!

Classical Characteristics and Elements

Classical music has various elements and characteristics that help give the genre its form. Here are some of them:

Melodies

The melodies of classical music are characterised by grace and simplicity in sound. Any classical music piece you listen to falls pleasantly on the ear, yet a lot is a nightmare to learn.

It is actually quite ironic to say that the melodies sound simple when it is the exact opposite when playing it.

Thus, it requires skill to be able to play complex and challenging melodies while sounding graceful, too.

The texture of the melodies are mostly a relatively simple homophonic texture, which is a single melodic line with chordal accompaniment.

The classical music period has clearly moved away from the polyphonic texture that was used during the Baroque era, but it is not unheard of for a classical piece to be polyphonic.

Structure, Form and Instruments

Most pieces are written in sonata form – which consists of an exposition, development and then recapitulation, or ABA.

The classical era actually introduced the symphony structure.

A symphony is made up of four sections, each called movements, where every moment follows its own structure or format.

Many stringed instruments were introduced to classical music.

These include the violin, the viola, the cello and the double bass.

The piano was also a newly added instrument during the classical period, basically replacing the harpsichord.

Dynamics

As mentioned earlier in this article, the dynamics in classical music are much more controlled, demure and graceful.

The piano made it possible to replace the harpsichord and do what the other instrument could never do: control the level of the sound.

Classical music makes use of “steady” dynamics, which is basically where the dynamics gradually shift instead of an immediate change.

Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn

Brilliant Artists Who Shaped The Genre

Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is one of the most influential composers of the classical period.

Mozart was born in Salzburg and started showcasing his musical talents when he was only five years old.

Mozart performed before European royalty and travelled a lot.

He visited Vienna where he stayed there and composed many notable works that have led to his greatest achievements and fame.

Unfortunately, Mozart’s life was cut short and passed away at the young age of 35.

Although his years were few, Mozart composed over 600 works during his lifetime, paving the way for the Romantic period and inspiring countless composers.

Some of his well-known works include the Magic Flute, the Jupiter Symphony and many more…

Beethoven

Many argue whether Beethoven is considered a classical composer or a romantic composer, since he lived to see both time periods.

Yet many of his works have influenced both styles, impacting both periods.

Bethoven was born in Germany, where he was initially taught by his father until at a later stage received proper piano lessons. His first set of string quartets was published in 1801.

Beethoven continued to compose and teach piano throughout his life.

He suffered from deafness later in his life, but not even that prevented him from composing music. He composed over 720 works and lived until the age of 56.

Beethoven is adored by many, even to this day. His works rank among the most performed of the classical music era. A composer no one will soon forget.

His most famous works are Symphony no.9, Für Elise, etc.

Haydn

Born in Austria, Joseph Haydn had revealed unusual musical gifts in his early years.

That led to him being apprenticed to his cousin Johann Frankh and training as a musician.

Later in his life, Haydn achieved great success through his compositions and findings. Sadly, Haydn suffered from an illness, so much so that he could not further compose.

During his last years he had found solace by playing his Emperor’s Hymn on the piano. Haydn has received many public honours before passing away, reaching the age of 77.

Haydn was of immense influence when it came to the development of the classical music style.

He helped establish forms for the symphony and string quartet, and he is even considered the father of classical symphony and string quartet!

Some of his works are the London Symphonies, Cello concerto No.2 in D major and more.

As we have explored the Classical era and the genre itself, it is evident of the beauty classical music holds in its grasp.

Over the centuries, the piano has given the world some incredible musicians. Obviously, we know that music is subjective, what appeals to one person may not be another’s cup of tea – but here are just a few of the pianists that we consider the greats.18th century

The most famous composer of them all, Mozart is regarded as one of the best pianists that ever lived. His work was hugely versatile and clearly reflects the way piano music changed during the classical era, he also inspired many of the other greats in this list.

Beethoven

Though better known as composer, Beethoven was also an incredible player. His work was heavily influenced by Mozart himself, with sources claiming the pair met in Vienna around 1787. One of Beethoven’s contemporaries, Carl Ludwig Junker, described his style of playing as ‘so greatly different from the usual method of treating the piano, that it seems as if he had struck out an entirely new path for himself’. Across his lifetime he composed over 9 symphonies, 5 concertos, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets.

Unless you happen to be Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury, it’s not often that a person inspires so much frenzy that they coin a whole word to describe it – that is, unless you’re Franz Liszt. ‘Lisztomania’ is the word used to describe the frenzy he created at his performances. Liszt was an incredible player, with fans all over Europe.

Franz Liszt is also the father of modern piano virtuosity and technique. His legacy inspired generations of pianists to become the best and develop the best technique possible!

The world of the piano owes Franz Liszt a great deal!

Frederic Chopin

Throughout the 19th century, Chopin battled with Franz Liszt for the title of the era’s best pianist. Chopin’s compositions are probably more well known, as his style is often cited as being more accessible than Liszt’s. Chopin is considered a great in many circles, with one his contemporaries stating: ‘One may say that Chopin is the creator of a school of piano and a school of composition. In truth, nothing equals the lightness, the sweetness with which the composer preludes on the piano; moreover, nothing may be compared to his works full of originality, distinction and grace.’

Lipatti was the pianist with the golden touch.

His interpretations of great piano works were absolutely flawless.

He was the embodiment of what it meant to play the piano.

If we had to select one pianist to rule them all (in terms of touch, sound, interpretation and technique) it would be Dinu Lipatti!

His interpretations of Chopin’s works were simply glorious – beyond the realm of this natural world! (Absolutely divine in sound and phrasing)

Lipatti was a puritian – he played music as the composer wanted it to sound!

Dinu Lipatti is definitely the London Piano Institute’s favourite pianist!

Vladimir Horowitz

Vladimir Horowitz

The eccentric virtuoso is considered by some to be the best pianist in history. His incredible playing touched anyone who had the honour of seeing him play, and he could pick up pieces by all of the greats with ease. He was put on the musical map after an outstanding performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1926, which received huge praise across the board.

A good friend of Vladimir Horowitz, Rachmaninoff was a child genius with incredible flair. His early influences included Tchaikovsky, but as he got older he developed his own style that was full of emotional harmonies and melodies. His work was often complex and this style made him a master of the craft.

Argerich is considered one of the greatest living pianists. An extraordinary player, her imaginative performances can sell out in minutes and she is renowned around the globe. She was the first woman to ever win the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition, an accolade that clearly demonstrates her talent.
